Quick Facts
  • Perinatal Mood and Anxiety Disorders (PMADs) include: Prenatal and Postpartum Depression, Anxiety, Panic Disorder, OCD, PTSD, Bipolar Disorder, and Postpartum Psychosis

  • Up to 20% of pregnant and postpartum patients will experience PMADs, making them the most common complication of pregnancy

  • Untreated Bipolar Disorder carries an 85% risk of relapse during pregnancy and a 70% risk of relapse postpartum, and is a major risk factor for developing postpartum psychosis

  • Risks of PMADs for the parent include: disrupted bonding and attachment to the baby, domestic violence, unemployment, housing instability, poor nutrition, increased use of alcohol and other substances, development of preeclampsia, severe hyperemesis, worse outcomes for patients with other medical conditions (such as hypertension or diabetes), and delivery by cesarean

  • Risks of PMADs for the baby include: premature birth, low birth weight, fetal death, decreased cognitive functioning, developmental delays, and behavioral issues

Most obstetric providers aren't trained in mental health, and most psychiatric providers aren't trained in obstetrics. This can leave patients in limbo, receiving substandard care for their specific needs during pregnancy and postpartum.

While this might sound intimidating, there are many effective and evidence-based treatment options available.
