Increased Miscarriage Risk Linked to Benzodiazepine Use in Pregnancy

A recent study published in JAMA Psychiatry found that benzodiazepine use during early pregnancy is linked to a nearly 70% increased risk of miscarriage. Both long- and short-acting benzodiazepines were associated with this risk, with the strongest association found with fludiazepam. Benzodiazepines can cross the placenta and impact fetal development, potentially leading to miscarriage. This research emphasizes the need for caution when prescribing these medications to pregnant women, particularly in the early stages of pregnancy.
